【KU-STAR Program for India 2025】 Suzuki Motor Corporation Information Session Held

India internship KU-STAR Kyoto University

The Division of Graduate Studies has been running the Kyoto University Short-Term Academic Research (KU-STAR) Program since last year. This marks the second time we’ve welcomed students from India, with 31 participants currently engaged in research at their respective labs for approximately two months. On July 10, 2025, at the Kyoto University Higashi-Ichijo Building, the KU-STAR Program hosted an information session with Mr. Masao Fujitani, Executive General Manager of the New Mobility Service at Suzuki Motor Corporation.

As part of the KU-STAR Program, we actively organize company visits and information sessions to help students gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths in Japan after pursuing their studies at Kyoto University. This event was a crucial part of that initiative.

For the KU-STAR students from India, Suzuki is an exceptionally well-known company, largely due to its “Maruti Suzuki” vehicles. In fact, according to JETRO’s 2024 data, Suzuki commands an overwhelming 40.9% share of India’s major passenger car market. This session provided a valuable opportunity for these students to gain profound insights into a leading Japanese corporation.

Mr. Fujitani provided a detailed overview of Suzuki Motor Corporation, including its company profile and the guiding principles of “Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty.” He also discussed the business scope and future prospects of the New Mobility Service, with a particular emphasis on potential expansion in India. A highlight was the introduction of young Indian employees who are actively contributing to Suzuki’s success, giving students a concrete picture of future career opportunities.

The session proceeded in a consistently welcoming atmosphere. Students eagerly posed numerous questions about the innovative projects undertaken by the New Mobility Service and internship opportunities at Suzuki. Mr. Fujitani also engaged the students directly, asking about their impressions of Japan and their observations on the differences between Indian and Japanese people after nearly two months in the country, which sparked a lively discussion.

After the session, students were observed approaching Mr. Fujitani individually to ask specific questions regarding recruitment opportunities, showcasing their strong career aspirations.

Voices from the Students:

“Suzuki is a common brand in India. In the session, the speaker introduced future mobility plans of Suzuki. It is more focused on public transport, which is more sustainable.” — Anand (Indian Institute of Science)

“It was very insightful to hear how Suzuki Motor Ltd. evolved into a global automobile giant. The session also provided valuable networking opportunities and highlighted the possibility of applying for internships in related fields, which was particularly exciting in terms of future career growth.” — Hemanta (Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur)
