【KU-STAR Program for India 2025】 Experiencing Cutting-Edge Automation: DMG MORI CO., LTD. Visit

India internship KU-STAR Kyoto University

The Division of Graduate Studies has been implementing the Kyoto University Short-Term Academic Research (KU-STAR) Program, a short-term laboratory internship program, since last year. This marks the second time we’ve welcomed participants from India, with a total of 31 students engaging in research at their respective laboratories for approximately two months. As the program entered its latter half, on Thursday, June 26, 2025, we conducted a visit to DMG MORI CO., LTD. The students witnessed cutting-edge technology firsthand through tours of the Iga Campus, the company’s largest production base, as well as the Nara Campus and the Nara Product Development Center.

At the Iga Campus, following a company overview, students toured the assembly plant, Global Parts Center, Global Solution Center, Mori Seiki Academy, and other facilities. They received detailed explanations of the entire process, from machining to assembly, testing, and shipping. The integration of MX (Machining Transformation) and DX (Digital Transformation) throughout the facility deeply impressed the students, who admired the ingenuity in enhancing efficiency and precision, the sophisticated design, and the high level of technical expertise. During the tour, students actively asked questions and intently observed the hands of workers and the structural details of the machinery.

Subsequently, at the Nara Campus, the students observed the production system for automated solutions. They encountered various shapes and functions of robots tailored to specific purposes, as well as massive systems combining multiple devices, many of which were entirely new to them. The company’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of customers worldwide while being rooted in the local community, along with its dedication to sustainability through technological innovation, served as a powerful inspiration for these students who aspire to play active roles on the global stage.

Finally, at the Nara Product Development Center, the KU-STAR students were warmly welcomed as well. They enjoyed their free time in the cafe space, taking in the views of Nara city.

This visit was an invaluable opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding of business operations and to form a clear vision of what it means to work for a globally active company.

We have received the following feedback from participating students:

  • The company and its machines are amazing. The turning centres, 5-axis machines, and complex tools made using this equipment are examples of technological advancement. Also, the company’s hospitality is impressive. (Anand, IISc)
  • Witnessing cutting edge automation. The entire technology was intriguing. (Amritha, IIT Hyderabad)
  • The factory visit wasn’t related to my field since I’m not as STEM student, but the experience and how the company prepared for the visit itself was closely related to one of the aspects we learn about in my field. So, by correlating the visit to my visit through my own observations, I was able to make the experience even more interesting and fun for myself. (Avleen, University of Delhi)
  • I was particularly impressed by their forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility. It was a privilege to see how innovation and environmental consciousness are integrated into their core operations. (Prajakta, MIT School of Distance Education)
